Kamalgatta (Lotus Seed) Mala

Traditional and spiritual significance

Goddess Lakshmi is traditionally associated with prosperity and auspiciousness, and the lotus is one of her familiar symbols. Kamalgatta malas are commonly chosen for Lakshmi mantra repetition and worship.

A prayer for abundance can include more than material gain: appreciation for what you have, care for your household, and a willingness to share. Let the mala accompany that intention without treating it as a promise of financial results.

How to use for chanting and meditation

Sit comfortably in a clean, quiet place and choose a mantra or intention. Move one bead for each repetition, using a gentle grip. Let the count follow your practice rather than rushing to complete the strand.

If your mala has a guru or meru bead and your tradition instructs you not to cross it, reverse direction when you reach it. Follow your teacher’s counting method for a formal practice; use a separate counter when you need a fixed total.

Suggested devotional practice

A simple Lakshmi devotional mantra is Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah (ॐ श्रीं महालक्ष्म्यै नमः). Recite it with attention and respect, or use the mantra taught in your own tradition.

Care and storage

Keep the lotus seeds dry. Dust gently with a soft cloth and avoid soaking them in water, milk, oil, or cleaning solutions.

Store in a breathable pouch away from damp surfaces. Handle the thread gently and inspect it before use, especially after prolonged storage.
