Lal Chandan (Red Sandalwood) Mala

Traditional and spiritual significance

Chandan malas have a traditional place in devotional practice. The wooden beads can be used as a personal reminder of steadiness, simplicity, and respectful attention during prayer.

Choose the mantra and observance recommended by your own tradition. Red sandalwood and white sandalwood should not be treated as interchangeable materials, and fragrance alone is not a reliable way to identify a wooden mala.

How to use for chanting and meditation

Sit comfortably in a clean, quiet place and choose a mantra or intention. Move one bead for each repetition, using a gentle grip. Let the count follow your practice rather than rushing to complete the strand.

If your mala has a guru or meru bead and your tradition instructs you not to cross it, reverse direction when you reach it. Follow your teacher’s counting method for a formal practice; use a separate counter when you need a fixed total.

Suggested devotional practice

Use your regular devotional mantra or a short prayer that you can repeat with attention. For a deity-specific or formal ritual, follow your teacher’s guidance on the appropriate mala and mantra.

Care and storage

Dust with a soft dry cloth. Keep the wood away from prolonged water exposure, detergents, perfume, and direct heat.

Store in a dry pouch and avoid soaking in oil or ritual liquids. Inspect the string from time to time and handle the beads gently during repetition.
