Holi 2025: Muhurta, Rituals, and Remedies

Holi, the vibrant festival of colors, love, and spring, is one of the most significant celebrations in Hindu culture. Observed on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Phalguna month, Holi marks the victory of good over evil and the arrival of spring after the long, cold winter. This festival is a time of joy, unity, and togetherness, where people come together to play with colors, share sweets, and celebrate love.
This year, Holi 2025 comes with an extra cosmic boost—a lunar eclipse occurring on 14th March. However, since the eclipse will not be visible in India, the country remains free from the Sutak period (the inauspicious time associated with eclipses). This means that Holi celebrations can take place without any restrictions, allowing people to enjoy the festival with Gujiya, Shakarparee, Thandai, and vibrant colors.
Holi is not just a festival; it has deep astrological and seasonal significance. It is believed to bid farewell to winter and welcome the warmth of spring. This transition is marked by spiritual purification, symbolized by Holika Dahan, and joyful celebrations on Dhulandi (Dhulivandan - the main Holi day).
Holika Dahan: The Story of Devotion and Triumph of Good Over Evil
Why Do We Celebrate Holika Dahan?
The festival of Holi is deeply rooted in the legendary story of Bhakta Prahlad and Holika. Prahlad, a Bhakta of Shri Vishnu, was the son of the demon king Hiranyakashipu.
Hiranyakashipu, intoxicated with his own power, considered himself the supreme ruler and despised Vishnu worship. Despite the king's commands, Prahlad continued his unwavering devotion to Shri Vishnu, angering his father.
Determined to end Prahlad's devotion, Hiranyakashipu sought the help of his sister Holika, who was blessed with a boon by Lord Brahma that fire could not harm her. She devised a plan to trick Prahlad into sitting on a blazing pyre with her, intending to burn him alive.
However, due to Prahlad's strong faith in Shri Vishnu, a divine miracle occurred—Holika was burned to ashes, while Prahlad emerged unscathed. This event symbolizes the ultimate victory of good over evil and reinforces the belief that devotion and righteousness always triumph.
This story is the essence of Holika Dahan, where people light bonfires, burn away negativity, and embrace new beginnings. Farmers also celebrate this day as a harvest festival, signifying abundance and prosperity.
Phoolon Ki Holi: The Divine Celebration in Vrindavan
Vrindavan, the land of divine love, is where Shri Radha and Krishna are believed to have played Holi in its purest form. The celebrations begin a day before the main Holi with Lathmar Holi, a unique tradition that symbolizes love, mischief, and playful teasing.
According to legend, Shri Krishna, known for his mischievous nature, would tease the Gopis (cowherd girls), prompting them to playfully chase him away with lathis (sticks). This tradition continues today, where women teasingly pretend to hit their partners with sticks, keeping the spirit of love and joy alive.
One of the most famous places to witness this grand celebration is the Banke Bihari Temple, where thousands of devotees gather to immerse themselves in Holi festivities with colors, flowers, and devotional songs.
Another cherished tradition of Braj ki Holi (Holi in the Braj region) originates from Lord Krishna's childhood tales. It is said that young Krishna would often complain to his mother, Yashoda, about his dark complexion compared to Radha's fair skin. In response, Yashoda playfully suggested that he apply color on Radha's face. This playful act is believed to have given birth to the tradition of Holi in Braj, signifying love that transcends physical appearances and unites souls.
