What ruby is

Ruby is the red variety of corundum, the same mineral family as sapphire. The red comes from chromium inside the crystal. More chromium means deeper red and more fluorescence, which is why a fine ruby seems to glow in sunlight.

Hardness is 9 on the Mohs scale. Only diamond is harder. You can wear a manik daily for years without the surface going dull.

The classical source is the Mogok valley in Burma, now Myanmar. The best Mogok material is called pigeon blood, a pure red with a soft blue undertone and no brown. Most of what sells in India today comes from Mozambique, which produces clean reds in larger sizes, along with Madagascar, Thailand and Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan rubies run lighter and pinker. Thai rubies carry iron, so they look darker.

The planet behind it

Surya is the significator of the soul. In practice the Sun governs your authority, your father, dealings with government and senior officers, self-confidence, public recognition and physical vitality.

A weak Sun shows up in recognisable ways. You do the work and someone else gets the credit. You hesitate before speaking in a room with seniors in it. Government files sit stuck. Low vitality in the afternoon, weak eyesight, brittle bones.

Strengthening Surya with manik changes the position you argue from. People start taking your word as final. Pending promotions move. You stop apologising for asking. On a chart where the Sun is already strong, ruby pushes you into arrogance instead. Lordship decides this, so get your chart read before you go by symptoms alone.

Who should wear ruby

Your lagna is the rashi rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born, and every house in your chart is counted from it. For what kendra, trikona, dusthana, yogakaraka and maraka mean, see which gemstone should I wear.

The Sun rules one sign, Leo. Find where Leo falls from your lagna.

Aries lagna (Mesh)

Leo is the 5th, a pure trikona, and the Sun is a friend of Mars. Wear it. Ruby supports children, education and your standing with seniors.

Taurus lagna (Vrishabh)

Leo is the 4th, a kendra, though Venus rules your lagna and Venus and the Sun aren't friends. Wear it only during Sun mahadasha or antardasha, mainly for property or education.

Gemini lagna (Mithun)

Leo is the 3rd, an upachaya house that gains from your own effort. Wear ruby only during a running Sun dasha, and keep it at 3 ratti.

Cancer lagna (Kark)

Leo is the 2nd, a maraka house. The Sun is friendly with the Moon, so harm is limited. Wear it only during Sun dasha and watch for eye strain or blood pressure.

Leo lagna (Simha)

Leo is the 1st, so the Sun is your lagna lord. Wear it lifelong. Manik works on your health, confidence and recognition together. Start at 5 ratti if your weight allows.

Virgo lagna (Kanya)

Leo is the 12th, a dusthana. Avoid ruby. It tends to pull money into losses and legal expenses, and it disturbs sleep.

Libra lagna (Tula)

Leo is the 11th, a house of gains, and the Sun is an enemy of your lagna lord Venus. Be cautious here. An 11th lordship isn't a reason to rule the stone out, and the planetary enmity means you shouldn't buy a manik on a general recommendation. Get the Sun's placement and strength checked first. If a Sun dasha is running and you want to see how your body responds, wearing a sunstone for a few weeks is a gentler way to test the Sun before you commit money to a ruby.

Scorpio lagna (Vrischik)

Leo is the 10th, a kendra, and Mars and the Sun are close friends. Wear it. Ruby works on career, promotion and reputation with authority.

Sagittarius lagna (Dhanu)

Leo is the 9th, the strongest trikona, and Jupiter and the Sun are friends. Wear it. This is the best case after Leo lagna.

Capricorn lagna (Makar)

Leo is the 8th, a dusthana, and the Sun opposes your lagna lord Saturn. Avoid ruby completely.

Aquarius lagna (Kumbh)

Leo is the 7th, a maraka house, with the same Sun and Saturn conflict running underneath. Be cautious. A maraka lordship calls for care, so wear it only during a Sun dasha and only after your astrologer has looked at your 7th house. Friction with a spouse or a business partner is the sign to watch for.

Pisces lagna (Meen)

Leo is the 6th, a dusthana. Avoid ruby. Jupiter and the Sun are friendly, so damage stays mild, and there's no gain to collect either.

Benefits

Career and authority. Ruby works best where you have the competence and lack the standing. Interviews and appraisals, and anything a senior person decides on the spot.

Government and legal matters. Stuck municipal files, land records, pension cases, licence approvals. Manik supports the case while you still do the paperwork.

Confidence in public. The hesitation before speaking in front of seniors eases. You state your position once and hold it.

Father and paternal line. A distant or difficult relationship with your father often softens over several months, and the same applies to inherited responsibility.

Health. Surya governs the heart and the eyes. Traditional practice uses manik as support for low vitality and chronic low blood pressure, alongside your doctor's treatment.

Who should avoid ruby, and the symptoms if you wear it wrongly

Check the lagna section above for your own verdict. Skip ruby also if your Sun is already exalted in Aries in a kendra, because more heat on a hot planet doesn't help, and get a chart check first if you're dealing with high blood pressure, acidity, skin inflammation, insomnia or a short temper.

Warning signs appear in the first two to three weeks. Sudden irritability. Headaches that start in the afternoon. Burning in the eyes. Red patches or boils. Disturbed sleep. Arguments with your boss or your father that come out of nowhere.

For how to run a proper trial period and what to do if these show up, see gemstone side effects.

Weight and how to work it out

Ruby's band is 3 to 5 ratti. The Sun's effect is strong, and a heavy manik overcorrects, so the range stays tight even for a heavy person.

A worked example. You weigh 65 kg, which puts you at 6.5 ratti on the body weight rule. That's above the band, so you round down and wear 5 ratti, which is 4.55 carat. A 45 kg person lands at 4.5 ratti and wears 4. A 90 kg person is still capped at 5.

If the stone has been prescribed for a specific dasha, start at 3 ratti and reassess after two months. Buy slightly above your target weight, since setting work can shave a little off a stone that needs a recut.

The full ratti to carat conversion and the body weight rule are explained on gemstone ratti weight.

Metal, finger and day

Metal is gold. The Sun and gold share the same quality of heat and brightness in the classical texts. Gold mixed with copper is the traditional alternative and costs less, and copper is the Sun's own metal. Silver belongs to the Moon and should be kept away from manik. Panchdhatu, the five-metal alloy, is acceptable only when gold is out of reach.

Finger is the ring finger of the right hand, or the left hand if you're left-handed. The ring finger is read as the Sun finger in Indian palmistry.

Day is Sunday, the Sun's own weekday. Wear it first during shukla paksha, the bright fortnight when the Moon is waxing from new to full, within the first hour after sunrise.

Keep the back of the setting open so the stone touches your skin.

How to wear it

Day: Sunday morning in shukla paksha, within an hour of sunrise. Metal: gold, or gold with copper. Finger: ring finger. Mantra, 108 times on a rudraksha mala before you put the ring on:

Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah

ॐ ह्रां ह्रीं ह्रौं सः सूर्याय नमः

Face east, and offer water to the Sun from a copper vessel if you can. Repeat the mantra every Sunday morning. The overnight soak, the puja steps and the offerings are set out in full on how to wear a gemstone.

Stones it can't be worn with

Diamond carries Venus, and Venus and the Sun work against each other. Blue sapphire carries Saturn, the Sun's declared enemy in the classical texts. Hessonite carries Rahu and cat's eye carries Ketu, and both shadow planets eclipse the Sun by definition.

Ruby pairs well with yellow sapphire for Jupiter, red coral for Mars and pearl for the Moon, when your chart supports those planets too. The complete pairing table for all nine stones sits on the gemstones hub.

Buying a ruby

Colour carries most of the value. You want a medium to medium-dark red that stays red under a tubelight and in daylight. A stone that goes brown or black in shade is overpriced at any price.

Clarity comes next. Ruby is almost never clean. Fine silk, a hairline network of rutile needles, is normal and helps prove natural origin. Open cracks reaching the surface, chips at the girdle and milky zones are the real problems. Dealers throw around grades like AAA, AA and A, and those are shop terms with no fixed standard behind them. Judge the stone in your hand and judge the lab report.

Heat treatment is the most common treatment and it's accepted worldwide. Nearly every commercial ruby is heated. Mild heating is tolerated by most practitioners, though unheated stones cost far more.

Lead glass filling is the one to fear. Low-grade cracked African material gets filled with lead glass to hide fractures, and the result looks good. Rotate the stone under a light. Glass-filled rubies show flashes of blue and orange inside the cracks, often with round gas bubbles in the filler. These stones have almost no durability and lemon juice or an ultrasonic cleaner will damage them.

Beryllium diffusion changes colour in a thin surface layer only. A lab catches it. Your eye won't.

Dyed stones leak colour. Wipe the stone with cotton dipped in acetone and check for transfer.

Synthetic ruby, grown by flame fusion, is chemically real corundum, so hardness won't expose it. Look for curved growth lines and round gas bubbles. Natural inclusions look angular or needle-like.

Red glass and red garnet get passed off as manik in small shops. Glass feels warmer to the touch and scratches easily. Garnet shows no colour shift when you tilt it, while natural ruby shifts between red and orange-red.

The certificate

Buy nothing above 20,000 rupees without a lab report. It must state the species as natural corundum, the variety as ruby, the exact carat weight and measurements, origin where claimed, and a clear treatment line reading no indications of heating, heated, heated with residue, or clarity enhanced. A report silent on treatment is useless.

For ruby specifically, a Gubelin or SSEF report from Switzerland is the standard once you cross a few lakh, because Burmese origin and unheated status are what carry the premium and only those labs settle both.

What ruby costs

Commercial grade, heated, Thai or African material with visible inclusions runs 1,500 to 8,000 rupees per carat. This is what most street-level astrological rings use.

Good Mozambique ruby, heated, clean medium red, runs 15,000 to 60,000 rupees per carat. For a 5 ratti stone that's roughly 70,000 to 2,70,000 rupees.

Unheated Mozambique or Madagascar of fine colour starts around 80,000 and crosses 2,00,000 per carat. Burmese Mogok pigeon blood, unheated and certified, begins at 2,00,000 per carat and fine examples cross 10,00,000.

Colour moves the price more than anything else, and a vivid red is worth double a brownish stone of the same size. Unheated multiplies the price several times over, and size pushes it up faster than the weight alone suggests. Add 8,000 to 25,000 rupees for a gold ring.

Substitutes if you can't afford ruby

Red garnet is the most used substitute for manik. Wear 7 to 9 ratti, set in gold or panchdhatu. Expect 300 to 2,000 rupees per carat.

Red spinel is the better substitute and costs more. It sits close to ruby in brightness and often gets mistaken for it. Wear 5 to 7 ratti. Expect 3,000 to 20,000 rupees per carat.

Sunstone is the gentlest option and suits people who react badly to strong stones. Wear 7 to 10 ratti.

All three follow the same metal, finger, day and mantra as ruby. For how upratna stones work and why the weight goes up, see upratna substitute gemstones.

How long before you see results

Ruby builds over several months, which makes it one of the slower stones of the nine.

The first two to three weeks are your trial window. After that, the early shift shows up usually in how people respond to you. Seniors listen longer. You get the floor in meetings. Outer results such as promotions, approvals and recognition land between the third and sixth month, and the effect peaks during a Sun mahadasha or antardasha. Check the stone every six months, because a crack, a chip or a clouded surface means replace it.

FAQ

Can anyone wear a ruby?

No. Ruby suits lagnas where the Sun rules the 1st, 5th, 9th or 10th house. For Virgo, Capricorn and Pisces lagnas the Sun rules a dusthana and the stone works against you. Libra, Aquarius, Cancer and Gemini call for caution and a chart check first.

What's the difference between Burmese and Mozambique ruby?

Burmese Mogok ruby has a softer, more fluorescent red with a blue undertone and sells for several times the price. Mozambique ruby is cleaner, available in larger sizes, and slightly more orange. Both carry the Sun equally well. Pay the Burmese premium for beauty and resale value.

How many ratti of ruby should I wear?

Between 3 and 5 ratti. Use one ratti per 10 kg of body weight as a starting point, then cap it inside that range. A 65 kg person wears 5 ratti.

Can I wear ruby and blue sapphire together?

No. Saturn and the Sun are enemies and the two stones pull in opposite directions. Pick one based on your lagna.

Is heated ruby acceptable for astrological use?

Mildly heated ruby is widely accepted. Avoid glass-filled and diffusion-treated stones completely, because the structure itself has been altered. Unheated is best if your budget allows.

Which finger should ruby be worn on?

The ring finger of the right hand, or the left hand if you're left-handed.

What if I stop seeing results after a few years?

Check the stone physically, because cracks and clouding reduce the effect. Also check whether your running dasha has changed, because a stone performs strongest during its own planet's period.

Can women wear ruby?

Yes. Vedic gemstone practice has no gender restriction. The lagna decides.
