Gemstone According to Rashi

What rashi actually means here
In Vedic astrology, rashi means the sign your Moon was sitting in when you were born. That's your Chandra rashi, also called janma rashi. It's what your family used to name you, and it's what a panditji asks for before any puja.
This differs from the sign most people know from newspapers. That one is the Surya rashi, your Sun sign.
The stone linked to your rashi is called the rashi ratna. People also search for it as a lucky stone, and that's the same idea. Each rashi has a ruling graha, and the rashi ratna is the gemstone of that graha.
A rashi stone is a reasonable starting point, and the last section of this page explains what it leaves out.
Sidereal date ranges
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, measured against the fixed stars, while Western astrology measures from the spring equinox. The gap between the two is called ayanamsa and now sits near 24 degrees, with the Lahiri ayanamsa being the Indian standard. That puts your Vedic Sun sign one sign behind your Western one most of the time, so someone born on 5 April reads as Aries in a Western chart and Pisces in a Vedic one.
These ranges shift by a day either way depending on the year.
| Rashi | Sidereal dates | Lord | Stone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesha, Aries | 14 April to 14 May | Mars | Red Coral |
| Vrishabha, Taurus | 15 May to 14 June | Venus | Diamond |
| Mithuna, Gemini | 15 June to 15 July | Mercury | Emerald |
| Karka, Cancer | 16 July to 16 August | Moon | Natural Pearl |
| Simha, Leo | 17 August to 16 September | Sun | Ruby |
| Kanya, Virgo | 17 September to 16 October | Mercury | Emerald |
| Tula, Libra | 17 October to 15 November | Venus | Diamond |
| Vrischika, Scorpio | 16 November to 15 December | Mars | Red Coral |
| Dhanu, Sagittarius | 16 December to 13 January | Jupiter | Yellow Sapphire |
| Makara, Capricorn | 14 January to 12 February | Saturn | Blue Sapphire |
| Kumbha, Aquarius | 13 February to 14 March | Saturn | Blue Sapphire |
| Meena, Pisces | 15 March to 13 April | Jupiter | Yellow Sapphire |
One warning. Those dates give you the Sun sign. Your Moon sign needs a calculation from your birth date, time and place, because the Moon changes rashi every two and a quarter days. If you know your janma rashi from your naming ceremony, use that.
The stone for each rashi
The friendly and avoid lists below come from house lordship, and they hold when this rashi is also your lagna. The canonical table for all twelve lagnas sits on the gemstones page.
Mesha (Aries), ruled by Mars
Stone: Red Coral (Moonga). Gold or copper, ring finger, Tuesday morning.
Mars runs your drive and your physical stamina. Coral steadies that energy so it comes out as action. Your temper settles with it. The stone supports people in surgery, defence, sport, real estate and anything that needs quick decisions. It also helps with low blood count and chronic fatigue.
Friendly stones: Ruby and Yellow Sapphire, since the Sun rules your 5th and Jupiter your 9th. Avoid: Emerald. Go carefully with Diamond and Blue Sapphire.
Vrishabha (Taurus), ruled by Venus
Stone: Diamond (Heera). Silver or platinum, middle or little finger, Friday morning.
Venus handles comfort, beauty, relationships and the money that comes from taste. Diamond supports marriage, creative work, the beauty and fashion trade, and anyone whose income depends on how things look. White sapphire works as the upratna if the budget is tight.
Friendly stones: Blue Sapphire, because Saturn is your yogakaraka, and Emerald. Avoid: Red Coral and Yellow Sapphire. Go carefully with Natural Pearl.
Mithuna (Gemini), ruled by Mercury
Stone: Emerald (Panna). Gold or silver, little finger, Wednesday morning.
Mercury runs speech, logic, trade and anything that moves through words or numbers. Emerald sharpens memory and helps you finish what you start, which Gemini natives often struggle with. It's the stone for teachers, writers, accountants, traders, coders and students sitting competitive exams. It also helps nervous disorders and skin complaints.
Friendly stones: Diamond. Avoid: Red Coral. Go carefully with Natural Pearl, Yellow Sapphire and Blue Sapphire.
Karka (Cancer), ruled by Moon
Stone: Natural Pearl (Moti). Silver, little finger, Monday morning.
The Moon runs your mind and your emotional footing. Pearl calms an overactive mind and helps when worry keeps you up at night. It supports the mother relationship, property matters and anyone in nursing, hospitality, food or public-facing work. Insist on a natural pearl, since cultured ones are the common substitute in the market.
Friendly stones: Red Coral, because Mars is your yogakaraka. Avoid: Emerald and Blue Sapphire. Go carefully with Ruby, Diamond and Yellow Sapphire.
Simha (Leo), ruled by Sun
Stone: Ruby (Manik). Gold, ring finger, Sunday morning.
The Sun carries authority, bone strength, the father relationship and your standing in the world. Ruby helps when you're doing the work and somebody else is getting the credit. It suits government service, administration, medicine, politics and family business. It also supports heart and eye health, and low vitamin D.
Friendly stones: Red Coral, your yogakaraka, and Yellow Sapphire. Avoid: Blue Sapphire and Natural Pearl. Go carefully with Emerald and Diamond.
Kanya (Virgo), ruled by Mercury
Stone: Emerald (Panna). Gold or silver, little finger, Wednesday morning.
Here Mercury works through analysis, service and detail. Emerald steadies the overthinking that Virgo natives know well, and it supports careers in audit, research, medicine, editing and data work. It helps digestion and gut-related anxiety too.
Friendly stones: Diamond. Avoid: Red Coral and Ruby. Go carefully with Blue Sapphire, Yellow Sapphire and Natural Pearl.
Tula (Libra), ruled by Venus
Stone: Diamond (Heera). Silver or platinum, middle or little finger, Friday morning.
Venus here runs partnership, negotiation and fairness. Diamond supports marriage, business partnerships, legal work, design and anything where you need people to agree with you. It also helps with kidney and reproductive health.
Friendly stones: Blue Sapphire, your yogakaraka, and Emerald. Avoid: Yellow Sapphire. Go carefully with Red Coral and Ruby.
Vrischika (Scorpio), ruled by Mars
Stone: Red Coral (Moonga). Gold or copper, ring finger, Tuesday morning.
Mars works through depth here. It digs in and stays. Coral supports research, investigation, surgery, occult study and anyone who deals with other people's money or secrets. It steadies the suspicion and the long silences that Scorpio natives fall into. It also helps blood disorders and recurring infections.
Friendly stones: Yellow Sapphire and Natural Pearl. Avoid: Emerald and Diamond. Go carefully with Ruby and Blue Sapphire.
Dhanu (Sagittarius), ruled by Jupiter
Stone: Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj). Gold, index finger, Thursday morning.
Jupiter carries wisdom, teaching, dharma, wealth and children. Pukhraj is the most widely worn stone in India and the safest of the strong ones. It supports teaching, law, finance, publishing and religious work. For women it's traditionally worn for timely marriage. Yellow topaz and citrine are the upratna options.
Friendly stones: Ruby and Red Coral. Avoid: Diamond and Natural Pearl. Go carefully with Emerald and Blue Sapphire.
Makara (Capricorn), ruled by Saturn
Stone: Blue Sapphire (Neelam). Silver, steel or panchdhatu, middle finger, Saturday evening, about two hours before sunset.
Saturn runs discipline, labour, structure and the long game. Neelam acts faster than any other stone of the nine, often within three days. It supports iron and steel, construction, mining, law, logistics and long government careers. It also helps chronic joint pain and money that keeps leaking out.
Test it before you commit. Wear it for three nights under your pillow or set in silver, and watch your sleep and your temper. The full trial method is on the gemstone side effects page.
Friendly stones: Diamond, your yogakaraka, and Emerald. Avoid: Ruby and Yellow Sapphire. Go carefully with Red Coral and Natural Pearl.
Kumbha (Aquarius), ruled by Saturn
Stone: Blue Sapphire (Neelam). Silver, steel or panchdhatu, middle finger, Saturday evening, about two hours before sunset.
Saturn here works through systems and groups. You get further inside an organisation than you do on your own. Neelam supports technology, social work, research, large organisations and anything unconventional. It steadies the detachment that Aquarius natives get accused of. Run the same three-night trial described under Makara.
Friendly stones: Diamond, your yogakaraka, and Emerald. Avoid: Natural Pearl. Go carefully with Ruby, Yellow Sapphire and Red Coral.
Meena (Pisces), ruled by Jupiter
Stone: Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj). Gold, index finger, Thursday morning.
Jupiter here works through intuition, faith and compassion. Pukhraj gives shape to that, so your kindness stops costing you money. It supports healing work, counselling, spiritual practice, teaching, music and the arts. It also helps with foot problems and sleep that leaves you tired.
Friendly stones: Natural Pearl and Red Coral. Avoid: Diamond, Blue Sapphire and Ruby. Go carefully with Emerald.
The caveat that matters
A rashi stone comes from one piece of information, your Moon sign, while your lagna decides which planets actually work in your favour. A Scorpio rashi person with Taurus lagna gets handed Red Coral by every shop chart, and the chart itself says Blue Sapphire.
The worked example, step by step, is on the which gemstone should I wear page. Check your lagna before you spend money, especially on Neelam, Gomed or Lehsunia.
How to wear a rashi stone
Weight follows body weight, and the ratti conversion with the per-stone minimums is on the gemstone ratti weight page.
Set the stone so the back stays open and it touches your skin, then follow the purification and mantra steps on the how to wear a gemstone page.
FAQ
Which stone should I wear according to my rashi?
Find your Moon sign, look up its lord, and wear that graha's stone. Aries and Scorpio get Red Coral, Taurus and Libra get Diamond, Gemini and Virgo get Emerald, Cancer gets Pearl, Leo gets Ruby, Sagittarius and Pisces get Yellow Sapphire, Capricorn and Aquarius get Blue Sapphire.
Is rashi the same as my Sun sign?
No. In Vedic astrology rashi means your Moon sign by default. Your Sun sign exists in the Vedic chart too, and the Moon sign is what's used for naming, muhurat and most predictive work.
What is a rashi ratna?
Rashi ratna means the gemstone of your Moon sign's ruling planet. It's the stone most people mean when they say lucky stone.
Can I wear a rashi stone and a lagna stone together?
Only when the two grahas get along. Ruby with Yellow Sapphire is fine. Red Coral with Blue Sapphire is not. Check the never-combine table on the gemstones page before you wear both.
What if two rashis share the same stone?
That's normal. Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, Venus rules Taurus and Libra, Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius. The stone is the same. What the planet does in your chart changes, because the house it sits in changes.
Do I need a certified stone?
Yes, for the expensive ones. Ask for a lab report from a recognised gemmological lab. It should confirm the stone is natural and state any treatment. Heated and filled stones are common in the market, and traditional practice treats a treated stone as weaker.
How long should I wear it before judging whether it works?
That depends on the stone. Blue Sapphire tells you inside a few days. Pearl and Red Coral take a few weeks. Emerald and Yellow Sapphire take one to three months, and Ruby and Diamond build over several months. Watch your sleep and the area of life that planet rules. If things get consistently worse in the first month, take it off and recheck your chart.
