Karungali (Ebony Wood) Mala

Karungali is the Tamil name for ebony heartwood. A Karungali mala is a rosary made from these naturally black wooden beads, traditionally used for mantra chanting, meditation and protective wear.

In South Indian tradition Karungali is believed to promote grounding, steady focus and protection from negativity. It is associated with Lord Murugan and with Mangal (Mars). These are traditional beliefs, not guaranteed results.

This mala has 108 Karungali beads plus 1 guru bead with a tassel, the traditional count for a full round of chanting.

Yes. It can be worn daily or used only for chanting. Remove it before bathing, swimming or applying perfume, and keep it dry to protect the natural wood.

Wash it gently in clean water or Ganga jal, let it dry, then keep it in front of your deity with a diya and incense. Chant your chosen mantra 108 times using the mala. Vedic Rishi also energises each mala before dispatch.

Tradition suggests keeping a personal mala for your own use only, because it carries your chanting practice. Keep a separate mala if you want to gift one or share one with family members.

Hold the mala in your right hand over the middle finger and move each bead towards you with the thumb. Avoid using the index finger. Keep the mala above your navel during chanting, and store it in a cloth pouch afterwards.
